Description:
Salesforce shares fell 18% after the company reported fiscal first-quarter revenue that missed estimates for the first time since 2006 and provided lighter-than-expected guidance. Revenue for the quarter increased 11% but still came in below analysts' estimates. Guidance also came in below estimates. Analysts said broader macroeconomic challenges impacted Salesforce's performance during the quarter more than expected. Execution issues and changes to their go-to-market strategy also played a role. Analysts remain optimistic about Salesforce's long-term prospects, especially around their investments in generative AI and how it could drive future growth.

England used to relish playing in front of a home crowd under Sarina Wiegman, but it is starting to feel like that magic is wearing off.

Defeat against France, their first loss in a qualifying fixture for 22 years, leaves them with work to do if they want to retain their European crown in Switzerland next year.

Only the top two teams will progress automatically from what is a tough Euro 2025 qualifying group, with England now in third place.

They now have to travel to France, who they play again on Tuesday, before facing Ireland at home and Sweden away in July.

Perhaps what is most concerning for Wiegman is that her side has taken just one point from their two home fixtures.

The Lionesses lacked a spark and, in truth, many looked tired after a testing season. Elisa De Almeida’s superb volley, which brought France level after Beth Mead had opened the scoring, was undoubtedly the best moment of a game lacking quality.

‘The result is disappointing and I think unnecessary,’ Wiegman said.

‘I think our performance was good for most parts of the game. The first part of course was very different than [what] we were expecting, so we had to find our feet to get started. After that we did well, we scored a goal, I think we had chances of scoring more, and then they scored from a corner. That was disappointing.

‘Then in the second half, I think we controlled the match more than we did in the first half. But we didn't score, we created almost no chances, so it's that pass that will create the best chance, or the touch, or the cross, in many moments we played pretty well but it's very frustrating that we then conceded a goal from a corner [set-piece], we know they're very good at that, so we wanted to do that [defend set pieces] very well, and in some moments we did but in too many moments we didn't.’

For the first time since February 2023, Wiegman was able to select a centre-back pairing of Leah Williamson and Millie Bright, with both players having spent time out injured in the last year.

But the decision not to select Alex Greenwood, who has enjoyed a fine season with Manchester City, at either center-back or left-back was puzzling.

Greenwood was arguably England’s best player at the World Cup last summer and her composure on the ball and passing ability was missed.

Things got off to a bad start for England when Mary Earps was forced off after just five minutes.

The goalkeeper, who was making her 50th international appearance, appeared to twist her hip after a routine pass and despite efforts to continue, was replaced by Hannah Hampton.

After a cagey opening, Ella Toone could have put England ahead mid-way through the half when she connected with Lauren Hemp’s cross in the box, but her effort spun just wide.

Hemp continued to cause problems down the left wing and, on the half-hour mark, created the opener. The forward’s cross evaded Alessia Russo and Georgia Stanway, who was perhaps fouled by Selma Bacha as she tried to connect with the deliv

In little more than 25 years – so the theory goes at least – one-quarter of the country’s electricity needs will come via homegrown nuclear power. Given the chequered history of attempts to bring through new nuclear, reaching that target by 2050 from the current 15 per cent looks ambitious.
But one place central to turning those aspirations into reality is the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) in South Yorkshire, which sits on land which was once part of Orgreave Colliery.

The facility has been used since 2012 as a base for researchers to test and develop millions of pounds worth of manufacturing innovations for the nuclear industry.

It mostly takes place in a giant open-plan workshop with offices on the top floor which overlook the hive of activity taking place below. It is in these offices where The Yorkshire Post is meeting CEO Andrew Storer.

In the earlier part of his career, Storer, originally from Derby, worked his way up through the ranks at Rolls-Royce to become part of their team tasked with setting up a civil nuclear business.

An initial political push in the early 2010s to find sites around the country for new nuclear power stations – a key factor in the initial establishment of the Nuclear AMRC which had Rolls-Royce as its lead industrial partner – ultimately fizzled out, partly as a consequence of concerns about the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan affecting investment decisions.

Storer joined the University of Sheffield-owned Nuclear AMRC in 2015 and was determined to find a viable future for the centre despite the altered political landscape.

It opened up to the nuclear decommissioning market, as well as defence and fusion reactors. The centre also established a supply chain programme called Fit For Nuclear.

Businesses involved in the programme have gone on to win more than £2bn worth of government contracts, safeguarding thousands of jobs.

The centre is also part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, a national network of seven specialist industry-focused research centres designed to help turn academic inventions into commercially-viable products.

In early 2022 following meetings with industry figures including Storer, Boris Johnson announced the launch of a new body called Great British Nuclear in a renewed attempt to bring forward projects.

Last week, the Government announced the start of talks with international firms about building a third major new nuclear plant at Wylfa in Anglesey which it is hoped could be similar in scale to also-planned schemes at Sizewell in Suffolk and Hinkley in Somerset. The latter is already under construction but may not open until the early 2030s.

In parallel to the large-scale plans, the UK is also pinning its hopes on what are known as small modular reactors (SMRs) which can be made in factories and involve a cheaper and quicker construction process. It is hoped they could be operational in this country by the mid-2030s.

Dell Technologies exceeded analysts' expectations for fiscal first-quarter revenue and earnings and raised its full-year revenue guidance. Dell's AI-optimized server orders increased significantly but the company's gross margins declined due to competitive pricing and a higher mix of AI servers. Dell's AI server backlog is primarily made up of orders for Nvidia-based servers as the company works through supply chain issues. The backlog also includes large cloud customers. Extended trading saw Dell's stock price drop over 18% following the earnings call.
