_will-deepfake-ai-content-influence-the-2024-election.webp "Nearly half of American voters believe AI-generated content will negatively impact the outcome of 2024 elections (43%), according to a recent poll.<br/><br/>The survey of 2,000 registered American voters revealed not only that people are increasingly pessimistic about a political digital-verse full of deepfakes, but also that people can’t distinguish between AI-generated content and human-created content. <br/><br/>As part of the study, respondents were asked to differentiate between AI-generated images and human-created images and the majority misidentified all AI images as human-created.<br/><br/>On average, only a third of respondents (33%) were able to correctly spot AI-generated images. <br/><br/>Comparisons between AI audio and a human voice were not more promising. When an audio clip with an AI voice was played, a fifth of respondents (20%) were unsure if it was human or AI, while 41% believed the AI voice was authentically human. <br/><br/>Commissioned by Yubico, in partnership with Defending Digital Campaigns, and conducted by OnePoll, the study found that politics is the number one media sector that has been negatively affected by deepfakes (AI-generated content intended to mislead), according to respondents. <br/><br/>Over three-fourths (78%) are worried about AI-generated content being used to impersonate political candidates and spread misinformation and 45% say they’re “very concerned” about this issue.<br/><br/>Almost half (49%) of respondents tend to question whether political videos, interviews, and ads online are real or are deepfake content.<br/><br/>And seven in ten (70%) are worried that authentic and truthful political information will be lost amongst misinformation online.<br/><br/>“In addition to the threat of AI and deep fakes spreading misinformation, 85% of respondents don’t have a high level of confidence that political campaigns effectively protect their personal information,” said David Treece, vice president of solutions architecture at Yubico. “This can have detrimental effects on a campaign, as a loss in trust for a campaign could mean voters avoid getting involved with the electoral process, from withholding donations, to even going as far as not voting for the candidate. It’s imperative that candidates take proper steps to protect their campaign and more importantly, to build trust with voters, by adopting modern cybersecurity practices like multi-factor authentication.” <br/><br/>Respondents said their top cybersecurity concerns during the 2024 election season were that a politician they support will be successfully hacked spreading false information and opinions (24%) and that political campaigns don’t take cybersecurity seriously enough in general (24%). <br/><br/>To remedy this, registered voters would like to see campaigns and candidates taking precautions to prevent their websites from being hacked (42%), using strong security measures like multi-factor authentication on their accounts (41%), and creating cybersecurity protocols and staff training (38%).")

Both teams came into this game with almost the same record, the Pacers having one more loss than Dallas. The Mavs are currently eighth in the west and are trying to secure a playoff spot. Dallas has now lost five of their last six matchups after losing to the Pacers 137-120.<br/><br/>The first half was neck and neck. Luka Doncic had 17 points midway through the second quarter and that was pretty much all Dallas had going on offense, everyone else was pretty quiet. The Pacers stayed in the game due to the help of their bench players. Their bench players had 36 points going into the half and played a big role in their lead going into the locker room, led by Bennedick Mathurin with 14 points. <br/><br/>Doncic finished the half with 28 points. <br/><br/>The Pacers took a 74-70 lead at the half. <br/><br/>Indiana came out hot and took the third quarter. The Pacers went on a 19-6 run to open up the third quarter giving them a 18-point lead over Dallas. This happened last game for the Mavs. They seem to get into a slump in the second half and see some significant deficits because of it. The Mavs were down 19 to the 76’ers on Sunday, they ended up coming back and only losing by four but they were down double-digits almost the whole second half. <br/><br/>Dallas did do better this game with turnovers. They only had seven entering the fourth quarter, last game they had 12 in the first half alone. <br/><br/>Indiana had 69 points off the bench tonight. <br/><br/>Indiana took the third quarter outscoring Dallas 32-18 giving them an 18-point lead entering the fourth quarter. <br/><br/>The lead carried well into the fourth quarter, Pacers having the largest lead of the night of 20. With 6:32 remaining in regulation Indiana had a 14-point lead. <br/><br/>Luka Doncic led all scorers with 39 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. He now has 41 triple-doubles in his career when scoring 30 points or more. <br/><br/>Kyrie Irving had 23 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. <br/><br/>Nine players scored in double figures for the Pacers and outscored the mavs on the bench 69-32. <br/><br/>The Mavs will be back in American Airlines Center on Thursday to face the Miami Heat at 6:30 PM.")

_british-farmers-will-plant-a-million-less-apple-trees-this-year-as-costs-soar-and-supermarkets-squeeze-prices.webp "British farmers will plant a million less apple trees this year as the industry is ravaged by inflation, labour shortages, climate change and cheap supermarket prices.<br/><br/>Landowners across the country are digging up their orchards as apple production becomes financially unviable.<br/><br/>According to British Apples and Pears Limited (BAPL), British apple growers normally plan to plant 1 million to 1.5 million trees every year. <br/><br/>But this year growers ordered just 500,000 saplings - and they have since cancelled a third of those.<br/><br/>Last year a report by the agricultural and sustainability consultancy Promar for the NFU found that inflation for growers was running at around 23 per cent. <br/><br/>But they only received on average a 0.8 per cent increase in their returns from selling apples to supermarkets.<br/><br/>The BAPL has now published data highlighting the continued struggles for the top UK fruit growers - the biggest data set ever released at one time by the industry.<br/><br/>It reported that confidence in British apple growing is understandably low - with 70 per cent of growers admitting they are less confident than they were a year ago and almost half (45 per cent) of respondents said they have scaled back their future investment plans.<br/><br/>Just three per cent said they have a ‘true partnership’ with supermarkets, while 45 per cent say retailers only care about price.<br/><br/>The immediate impacts of orchards not being replanted is the loss of British-grown varieties, as well as biodiversity loss.<br/><br/>But long-term implications means a decrease in British apples in supermarkets for shoppers - at a time when buying local is being encouraged.<br/><br/>There are many factors as to why this is happening - but simply put, growers are unable to afford to invest in new orchards because they are getting such low returns for their fruit - they are no longer profitable.<br/><br/>James Smith, a fifth-generation fruit grower who runs Loddington Farm in Kent, has ripped up three orchards because apple production is no longer financially viable.<br/><br/>He has been in the business for over 20 years, but says growers cannot afford to invest in new orchards because they have such low returns on their fruit. <br/><br/>When he joined the farm 98 per cent of their income was from apples and pears.<br/><br/>But Loddington Farm's commercial apple production has dropped from 80 per cent to 4 per cent since 2018.<br/><br/>His remaining orchards are currently being converted to organic production but there has been no new planting since 2018.<br/><br/>James says climate change, labour shortages, energy prices and retailer behaviour all play an equal role in the farm's decision to step away from apple production.<br/><br/>He said: \")
