Description:
Nearly half of the UK’s pets now have their own dedicated room where they can relax in peace and store their belongings, research has revealed.

A poll, of 2,000 cat and dog owners, found 48 per cent have a reserved room for their pets or a space in the garden.

Just over half (55 per cent) want them to have their own 'chill out' area, while 34 per cent want to ensure maximum comfort.

And 30 per cent want all their possessions kept in one place.

But for 18 per cent, its sole purpose is so their stuff doesn’t take up space in the rest of the home.

It also emerged 46 per cent of pet owners have designed their home around their pet, although 21 per cent admitted they are unlikely to buy items to appease their furry friend that don’t match their interior style.

The study was commissioned by Homesense - part of the TK Maxx family - which has partnered with Kelly Brook, to launch a pet and interiors content series ‘Barkitectural Digest’.

In the style of a high-end home interior magazine, Kelly and her beloved pup, Teddy, grace the pages in a luxury home decked out with more affordable homeware and pet products to spread inspiration for other pet owners.

Kelly Brook said: “I adore Teddy. He’s family and a big part of my life he is, so it’s no surprise that there are elements in my home designed around him.

“It turns out I’m not the only one, and I am thrilled to help inspire others to design their perfect home and pet haven.”

The study also found of those who have designed their home around their pet, top changes included moving delicate things higher up (29 per cent), adding a cat flap (21 per cent) and installing a garden fence (20 per cent).

Others have replaced carpets with hard floors (16 per cent) or bought scratch proof furniture (11 per cent), while nine per cent have even chosen dark furnishings to disguise pet hair.

Nearly one in five (17 per cent) have installed baby gates to stop wandering cats and dogs and 19 per cent have covered up pet inflicted damage with blankets.

However, 38 per cent don’t believe there is enough inspiration available to help stylishly decorate their home with their pet in mind.

And 75 per cent struggle to find pet products that are good quality and reasonably priced.

The research, carried out via OnePoll, found owning an animal has been more expensive than expected for 41 per cent, with insurance and food among the costs that surprised them most.

While 15 per cent claim they spend more on their cat or dog than they do on their children, holidays and their car, with the average owner spending £708 on their furry friend a year.

As a result, 59 per cent have had to compromise on pet products due to their cost - especially on food, toys and beds.

A Homesense spokesperson added: “We’re a nation of animal lovers, and we believe you should never have to compromise when it comes to your pets.\

There's been plenty of players over the years that entered the Indians organization with high hopes of being a star in the Majors. While it could have been injuries or inconsistency, a number of players just never seem to work out for one reason or another. Here's six that failed to reach the lofty heights the Indians and fans hoped they would have.

Meet one of Britain’s youngest business owners – who customers often mistake for staff rather than the boss.

Chloe Frost, 18, opened The Baking Suite - her very own café - in October 2023.

She initially considered starting an apprenticeship after finishing her A levels in June, but instead decided to follow her ‘dream’ – which had always been baking.

Now, Chloe has her own place in Bromham, Beds., and neither she, nor her customers, can quite believe it.

She said: “I’ve just always loved baking. After sixth form, I started making and selling celebration cakes on Instagram.

“So then I just thought, why not do this properly? Even though that still feels crazy.

“People hardly ever think it’s me that runs the place.

“Even today, with one of our regulars, he said, ‘Where’s the boss then?’ And I said, ‘I am the boss.’

“People are always surprised but everyone is supportive when they realise.”

Chloe took over the site at the end of August after a previous café closed – and then spent just over a month re-decorating, re-fitting the kitchen, and making the place feel like hers.

She said: “I thought it was a good opportunity as there was already a small customer base. But I wanted to turn it into my own place too.”

The Baking Suite offers breakfast, lunch and an array of tasty sweet treats – all of which Chloe bakes from scratch by herself.

So far, her banana bread and rocky road have been consistent crowd pleasers – but she says classics like brownies, scones, and millionaire shortbread are always popular too.

Chloe currently has two staff members – chef Kimberley White, who has 18 years' experience, and barista Rosie Harrington, her brother Jonathan’s fiancée – but one day Chloe hopes to have a bigger team.

“I would love to open more premises at some point,” she said. “But it’s all about taking things one step at a time.”

Chloe says business has been going well so far – with the café already boasting plenty of regulars.

“We have a lot of customers who we see nearly every day,” she said. “Builders, dog-walkers, elderly people, those working from home.

“Of course, sometimes there’s a quiet day or two – but that’s to be expected in hospitality.”

Chloe says other local businesses have supported her too, with nearby Wooden Hill Coffee Company, whose coffee the café serves, offering all staff members free barista training.

She currently isn’t taking in a salary, but is making enough for rent, outgoings, staff salaries, and to pay back her dad – who financed the initial opening.

Chloe said: “I’m very lucky to have such a supportive family. My grandparents even keep a bunch of ingredients in their freezer for me.”

Chloe said she would encourage other young people to follow their dreams like she did – but only if they’re willing to put in the effort.

“I definitely would say to other young people who want their own business that they should follow their dreams and their passions,” she said.

A gang of monkeys raided a pickup truck for oranges in a notorious macaque-infested town in Thailand.Footage shows the marauding troop swarming the back of a white pickup truck to steal fruits from its cargo bed in front of the Phra Prang Sam Yot temple in Lopburi province on April 23.The monkeys converged on the vehicle while it was waiting at a level crossing. The truck driver honked the car horn trying to drive the monkeys away, but stayed inside as they were known to attack humans for food. He sped away when the traffic light turned green.Monks passing through the area have also begun carrying toy guns to deter the aggressive monkeys from pouncing on them. On March 23, a macaque caused a head-on collision along Ratchadamnoen Road when it hopped onto a motorcycle to grab a plastic bag of food.Furious vendors and locals this week hung vinyl banners slamming the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) for allegedly failing to address the town's longstanding problem. They claimed that local authorities were slow to enact wildlife policy amendments that would allow them to deal with the monkeys - a protected species in Thailand - in urban areas. The planned relocation of the macaques has also been postponed to May due to the lack of enclosures to contain them.Addressing the criticisms, DNP director-general Atthaphon Charoenchansa had said: 'There was a rehearsal and adjustment of the plan to capture the monkeys by using cages to lure many monkeys in at a time, unlike the previous round that used tranquilizer darts focused on capturing the troop leader. Therefore, I want Lopburi residents to understand that we are not behind on our tasks.'Lopburi has become a popular tourist destination because of its large population of monkeys. The monkeys are mostly long-tailed macaques, and they can be found all over the city, from the temples to the streets. However, they can also be aggressive, and they have been known to steal food and belongings.
